- An Investigation into Factors Contributing to Pass Rates in Biology at O’ Level. A Case Study for Gokwe Central in Gokwe South District
- Abstract
-
This study investigated the fluctuating pass rates in schools within Gokwe Central, Gokwe South District, with a specific focus on four primary themes: teacher
experience and qualifications, instructional approach, sufficient resources, and teacher and learner attitudes. The research revealed that while these factors played a significant role in academic achievement, other crucial variables contributed to improved pass rates. These additional variables included learner caliber, curriculum modifications, parental involvement, incentives by School Development Committees (SDCs), and government policies. The case study highlighted the interconnectedness of these variables in promoting academic success in Gokwe Central and similar settings. The findings suggested that a
comprehensive approach, considering both the primary themes and additional variables, was essential for enhancing academic achievement and improving pass rates in the district. Therefore, qualitative approach has been used to gather data from two sampled schools. The targeted population sample was form 4 Biology learners, the Biology teacher and the head of department. The stratified random sampling and the purposive sampling techniques have been employed to select the participants. The study's insights have implications for educational policy, practice, and future research in Zimbabwe and comparable contexts. - Date
