- Abstract
- The purpose of the current study was to obtain an in-depth understanding of the factors which lead to better performance of learners in mathematics at private schools than public schools in Epmafara District of Harare Province in Zimbabwe. The study also aimed to find out the factors that affect the teaching of mathematics in both public and private schools. The research employed a case study research design. A sample of 74 participants took part in the study. The sample constituted of 60 students, 2 headmasters, 2 principals, 6 teachers and 4 heads of mathematics department from both public and private schools. Data were generated from non participant observation, document analysis and 70 questionnaires administered to students, headmasters, principals and teachers. The study found out that performance in mathematics is better in private schools than public schools. This was mainly because of the scarcity of resources, class sizes, level of parental involvement, teacher support and that private schools have their own way of enrolling learners which is different from the public schools way. Several factors emerged as crucial in improving the learner performance in mathematics in public schools. Firstly, there is need for public schools to improve on teacher training and support so that teachers change their attitude towards work. There is also need for public schools to improve on curriculum and instruction so that it meets the international standards. Thirdly, technology must be integrated in the teaching and learning of mathematics that lessons become interesting and motivates the learners. Public schools also need to improve on parent and community involvement as it can leverage resources and expertise to enhance math education. Extracurricular activities and mathematics clubs must be formed in public schools as they provide valuable opportunities for students to reinforce math concepts, develop problem solving skills and foster a positive attitude towards mathematics. Lastly, public schools need to improve their school culture and motivation as a positive school culture fosters motivation and persistence
