- Most rural societies are affected by poverty in Zimbabwe and this affects the provision of quality education resulting in high failure rates at ‘’O’’ Level chemistry in most rural schools. The main purpose of the study was to find out the perspectives of both students and teachers on factors that contribute to low percentage pass rate in chemistry at ‘O’ level in rural areas, a case of Marange Cluster, Mutare District, Manicaland Province. In this research study, the writer used structured questionnaires to collect data. Data was collected from 4 Chemistry teachers from different schools in Marange cluster,40 chemistry students. The results from the study revealed the factors that contribute to low percentage pass rate in chemistry in rural schools to include, inadequate teaching and learning resources i.e. (lack of laboratory facilities, shortage of classrooms, lack of instructional media e.g. textbooks), teachers’ and learners’ attitudes towards chemistry, socioeconomic background and teacher expertise and experience. Necessary recommendations were made.
