- Abstract
- The study explored the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools located in the Bindura district. The main objectives focused on the teacher readiness and challenges encountered in integrating ICts and ICT tools in mathematics education. The research adopted a constructivist paradigm is suitable for this research study as it allows for exploration of teacher readiness and challenges to integrate ICTs in teaching and learning of mathematics in secondary schools. The research study also used both qualitative and quantitative approaches. A case study design was employed. Probability and non-probability sampling techniques were used, resulting in a sample size of eight respondents. Data was collected through interviews, and questionnaires and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that approximately 83.3% of the teachers were not trained on how to use ICTs hence were not prepared to integrate ICTs in mathematics teaching and learning in secondary schools. Teacher preparedness to integrate ICTs in mathematics was found to be compromised by no training of teachers on how to use ICT tools when teaching mathematics. The study also found that schools had inadequate or no ICT tools to use in mathematics lessons. Internet connectivity was also found to be a hindering factor to use ICTs in mathematics lessons. The research further revealed that only a few teachers incorporate ICTs in their teaching with the main tool being the scientific calculator. The researcher concluded that integration of ICT in mathematics is still a dream yet to be fulfilled. The study recommends further research on Integration of ICT in teaching and learning mathematics in secondary schools.
