- Abstract
- The study aimed at exploring the effective pedagogical approaches to enhancing the teaching of chemistry at Chapwanya high school. To this effect, Chapwanya High School in Manicaland was chosen as the study location. The main objectives of the study were to identify effective pedagogical approaches in teaching chemistry in secondary school science classes, to assess the impact of different instructional strategies on students' engagement and understanding of chemistry concepts and to investigate the role of teacher professional development in enhancing chemistry education. The constructivism theory informed this study and the study adopted the qualitative research approach and the qualitative case study in explaining the pedagogical approaches to enhancing the teaching of chemistry at Chapwanya high school. In depth interviews and key informant interviews were used to collect data from participants. The study adopted the thematic analysis in analyzing the data collected from the participants. The study found that inquiry based learning; collaborative learning and technology integration are effective pedagogical approaches to improving the teaching of chemistry. Pedagogical approaches helps students connect with chemistry, improves student understanding and engagement and promotes meaningful learning. Teacher professional development is important because it ensures teachers stay up-to-date with current information; enhance a lifelong research practice and essential for the exchange of skills and knowledge on enhancing the teaching of chemistry.
