- Abstract
- This study looked at factors causing low pass rate in ordinary level chemistry at Empandeni High School in Mangwe District. The study was guided by the following objectives - to establish the extent to which: teaching methods, teacher and student motivation, socio-economic backgrounds, student’s attitudes, resources and teacher-student relationships influence performance in ordinary level chemistry at Empandeni High School. The study used cross-sectional research design to collect data from the population samples. Purposive sampling technique was used to select key informants which were the Chemistry teachers and Head of department. Stratified and simple random sampling techniques were used to select 60 student participants on equal ratios of form threes and form fours. Questionnaires and interviews were used as a means of data collection from Chemistry students and key informants respectively. The research study has revealed that shortage of resources, teacher pupil ratio, teaching methods, motivation and socio-economic backgrounds of students are some of the factors causing low pass rate in Chemistry at Ordinary level. The recommendations to alleviate the problem are that schools should consider hiring more qualified chemistry teachers, provide adequate teaching and learning resources, consideration of students’ cultural and learning backgrounds in choosing instructional strategies as well as shifting from the traditional methods of teaching to more interactive and child centred approaches.
