- Abstract
- This study sought to explore factors influencing learners’ performance in Ordinary Level Biology at the selected school. Data generation, analysis, and discussion were grounded in an interpretivist paradigm and qualitative approach. The researcher used document analysis and interviews in generating data. In this research study, ten learners were conveniently selected and four teachers were purposively selected to form the sample for this study. The generated data were analyzed according to themes derived from the formulated research questions. Findings of the study revealed numerous strategies (i.e., problem-solving, inquiry-based learning, differentiate learning, design-based learning, project-based learning, etc.) were used in preparing learners for Ordinary Level Biology examinations. These strategies were used in such a way that learners are engaged in an interactive manner, thereby enhancing their conceptualization on key principles and procedures. However, in using these strategies numerous challenges were encountered, large class size, limited resources, etc. From the findings it can be concluded the performance of learners in Ordinary Level Biology examinations was influenced by numerous factors, such as strategies used to prepare them, resources available, class size, etc. Based on the findings it can be recommended that teachers need to be encouraged to diversify the strategies that use in preparing learners for the Ordinary Level Biology examinations.
