- Abstract
- This study sought to investigate the integration of 3D Interactive Virtual laboratories into Ordinary level chemistry teaching and learning. Data generation, analysis, and discussion were grounded in an interpretivist paradigm and qualitative approach. The researcher used focus group discussions and interviews in generating data. In this study, fifteen students and two teachers were purposively selected to form the sample for this study. The generated data were analysed according to themes derived from the formulated research questions. Findings of the study revealed that the participants understand 3D Interactive Virtual laboratories as an interactive platform where students can interact with virtual laboratory equipment. It was acknowledged that 3D Interactive Virtual laboratories had a significant role in promoting learner-centred approach in Chemistry teaching and learning. In integrating 3D Interactive Virtual Laboratories into Ordinary Level Chemistry practical approaches such as inquiry based learning, project-based learning, design-based, etc. were used. However, on integration of 3D Interactive Virtual laboratories into Ordinary Level Chemistry teaching and learning various challenges were encountered including lack of infrastructure, limited funding, and resistance by implementers and lack of IT knowledge on the teachers. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that to a greater extent at the selected secondary school the integration of 3D Interactive Virtual laboratories into Ordinary Level Chemistry teaching and learning has a positive influence on students’ participation in activities. The researcher recommends that the school should provide adequate ICT to enhance the integration of 3D Interactive Virtual laboratories into Ordinary Level Chemistry teaching and learning.
