- Abstract
- This research study sought to identify the KAP towards waste separation at source, at household level, mainly focusing on Bindura residents, with particular interest in Chipadze high density suburb, Aerodrome medium density suburb and Shashi low density suburb. In other words, determination of current awareness levels, willingness to partake in separation at source initiatives in the foreseeable future and current practices amongst the targeted respondents, as well as the relationships existing between KAP and socio-demographic characteristics. A total of 150 questionnaires were self-administered. Stratified random sampling technique was employed. Moreover, the collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 20 after being organized in Microsoft Access and also coded in Microsoft Excel, to denote frequencies and percentages as well as p-values and r- values. The results obtained showed that only 37.93% of the respondents were practicing S@S although 61.38% of the respondents had knowledge about it and 72.40% demonstrated positive attitude towards S@S. However, 75.90% of the respondents showed interest in partaking in S@S in the future. In terms of significant relationships between variables, area of residence, age and marital status had significant association with practice for their p-values < 0.05. To add on, gender and area of residence had strong positive correlation with attitude whilst age showed an association with knowledge. In a nut shell, the KAP associations gleaned showed that having knowledge and positive attitude does not necessarily mean one is actually putting S@S into practice.
