Abstract

The research objectives were to ascertain the current working practices, evaluate the
factors affecting the choice of working practices and to assess the extent of correlation
between flexible working practices and employee turnover in the Ministry of Lands,
Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development–RSD can adopt. The current
working practices, factors affecting choice of working practice, relationship between
flexible working practice and employee retention and the recommendation on the best
work practices were highlighted. Questionnaires were used to collect data from
employees of the organisation. Questionnaires were administered to both the
managerial and non-managerial staff of the organisation. Respondents were drawn
from Ministry Of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development– Ministry
Of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development– Ministry Of Lands,
Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development– Research Services Department in
Harare. Stratified and random sampling technique and a sample of 100 respondents
was used. The researcher found out that shift work, part time work, flexi time and hybrid
work are very commonly used at Ministry Of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and
Rural Development– Ministry Of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural
Development– Ministry Of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development– Research Services Department. The researcher also noted that there is a positive
relationship between flexible working practices and employee retention. Flexible
working practices improves the work-life balance of employees, reduces employee
absenteeism and improves employee commitment. The factors affecting the choice of
working practices found include; increased pressure on managers and employee
resistance to adapt. Finally, the recommendations found on the best work practices in
respect of employee retention include; employee career advancement through effective
training programs and total employee engagement through employee involvement in all
programs. It was concluded that there is a positive core relationship between flexible
working practices and labour turnover in the health industry. Furthermore, the
organization must adopt other new working practices so as to improve on service
delivery
