Abstract
This dissertation examines the socio-environmental conflicts between mining operations and local communities, with a focus on the BETA Bricks Pvt Ltd (Svisva Quarry Mine) in Zimbabwe. The study aims to identify the nature and extent of these conflicts, understand their root causes, and evaluate their impacts on both the community and the mining company.
Using a mixed-methods approach, this research combines qualitative and quantitative data collected through interviews, surveys, and environmental assessments. Key stakeholders, including local community members, mine employees, and local government officials, were engaged to provide comprehensive insights into the socio-environmental dynamics at play.
The findings reveal significant areas of conflict, including issues related to land use, environmental degradation, health impacts, and socio-economic disparities. These conflicts are often exacerbated by inadequate communication, lack of transparency, and insufficient community involvement in decision-making processes.
Based on the analysis, this dissertation proposes several strategies for conflict resolution, including improved stakeholder engagement, transparent communication, and sustainable environmental management practices. Recommendations are provided to foster a more harmonious and sustainable relationship between BETA Bricks Pvt Ltd and the local communities, emphasizing the importance of balancing economic development with social and environmental responsibility.
This study contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable mining practices and provides valuable insights for policymakers, mining companies, and communities facing similar challenges globally.
