- Abstract
- The most important factor that plays a pivotal role in the rooting and quality production of floricultural crops is the rooting media. In rose production, application of auxin-based, commercially available rooting hormones to the rooting media, is well-known for enhancing the process of regeneration of roots in the cuttings and their survival. In Zimbabwe, the commonly used rooting media in the production of hybrid tea roses, is a composition of coco-peat, vermiculite, calcium nitrate and the rooting hormone, Indole Butyric Acid. All these components are sold by suppliers at different prizes depending on quantity therefore using it can be costly. Small scale farmers are finding it difficult to venture into the production of the highly demanded hybrid tea roses by foreign markets, because of too much funds needed for inputs such as greenhouse facilities and media components. There is pressing need to analyze the use of freely available media and their effect on initiating root development and sprouting of hybrid tea roses so that costs of production can be minimized. This research aims to address this knowledge gap by examining the effect of applying the rooting hormone (Indole Butyric Acid (IBA)) in different rooting media, in enhancing root regeneration of grafted rose seedlings. An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse with controlled environmental conditions, where three different media were compared on initiating root regeneration and sprouting of three different hybrid tea rose varieties. Replicas of each of the three different media were prepared and no Indole Butyric Acid (rooting hormone) was added. Eighteen float trays were used to accommodate eighteen treatments, each treatment comprising of twelve grafted plants. Mature rootstalks (15 weeks old) from the Natal briar plant were used in the grafting process. The primary objective of this study was to assess root and shoot development of three Hybrid Tea rose varieties in three different rooting media with and without application of Indole 3-butyric acid. The data was analyzed using statistical tests (GenStat 7th edition) to determine whether the application of IBA in different media have a significant effect on the rooting and sprouting of different rose varieties. Indole Butyric acid proved to be a necessity depending on the rooting media in use. Its significant effect in promoting root and shoot development was seen in Vermiculite + coco-peat + Calcium nitrate media and in anthill clay media. Humus proved to be a good rooting media even without Indole butyric acid applied. The potential limitation of this research is that it will be conducted in a greenhouse with controlled environment therefore, the results may not be useful to other growing environments for roses.
