- Abstract
- The main aim of this study is to find out the impact of streaming learners at form three level according to their ability in mathematics to their performance of Mathematics. In this study, the effects of streaming learners according to their ability in the performance of Mathematics at Ordinary level in three selected secondary Schools in Glenview/Mufakose District, Harare were explored. The schools use the strategy of streaming learners according to their ability so that they cater for individual differences. The research found out that there are benefits and disadvantages of streaming learners. Also streaming promotes inequalities among learners. The low ability classes are the most disadvantaged, since they are not given special treatment they should get in order to improve academically. The study conducted at three secondary schools using questionnaires, observation guide and interviews guide as research instruments. The study explores the effects of streaming practices that put learners into three different groups which are Arts, Commercials and Sciences. The learners who perform best in Mathematics are put in Sciences, those who perform better are placed in Commercials and who have difficulties in Mathematics are placed in Arts. These groups determine what the learners will do in future. Implications of the study also includes research on ways schools can employ to overcome the disadvantages.
