- Abstract
- This study sought to establish Geography teachers’ level of preparedness in the use of Artificial intelligence (AI) in geography education in Chitungwiza. As educational technologies rapidly evolve, the potential for AI to enhance teaching methodologies and learning outcomes is significant. However, the successful implementation of these technologies depends heavily on teachers' readiness and competence in utilizing them effectively. The study was grounded on the pragmatist paradigm and employed a mixed method approach. This design enabled the study to inherently exploit the use of both qualitative and quantitative analysis procedure. The sample comprised 30 participants who were selected using purposive sampling method. The data were collected through semi-structured questionnaire and in-depth interviews. Numerical data were analysed through the use of frequencies and percentages, with non-numerical data analysed according to emerging themes. From the analyzed and interpreted data, it was noted that the geography teachers’ level of preparedness was a function of their proficiencies in AI. While some teachers demonstrate enthusiasm and a willingness to adopt AI, many express feelings of unpreparedness due to inadequate training programs and limited resources. The study concluded that geography teachers’ level of preparedness to integrate AI was significantly low due to an array of factors that emerged. From this conclusion, the researcher recommends that continuous professional development for Geography teachers was indispensable to up skill and prepare them adequately to function in a fast-evolving digital world.
