- This study investigated the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and performance in biology, and potential interventions to improve academic outcomes for low-income learners. A mixed-methods approach was employed. The study targeted form 3 biology students and their parents from public schools in rural areas, with a sample representing diverse backgrounds. Questionnaires were administered to a sample of 100 form 3 biology learners from diverse SES backgrounds, followed by interviews of 10 parents. The study gathered data on learners' motivation, parental support, and learning environments. Interviews with students and parents provided insight into their experiences and perceptions. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and while qualitative data were analyzed thematically. Results showed differences in learning environments, motivation, and parental support between low-income and wealthier learners. Despite facing challenges, learners from low-income families demonstrated motivation to learn biology. Parents from low SES supported their children's education but faced barriers. Interventions such as resource provision, targeted tutoring, parental education initiatives, and culturally responsive teaching practices can improve academic performance for low-income learners in biology. Educators and policymakers should address systemic inequalities and provide support systems to create a more equitable learning environment. This study highlights the need for targeted support to address the impact of SES on biology performance, ensuring equal opportunities for all learners to succeed.
