- Abstract
- The project aims to investigate the effectiveness of utilizing resources in teaching Form 3 Biology with the goal of improving the pass rate at school in Harare. The study will focus on identifying and implementing various resources, such as sample grant applications, rubrics for assessment, language objectives in content-area instruction, and the Next Generation Science Standards, to enhance the teaching and learning experience in the Biology curriculum. In this research, a sample of 12 learners from a Form 3 Science class was selected and divided into an experimental group and a control group. Throughout the study, the learners underwent 3 pre-tests, 3 post-tests, and completed 3 questionnaires, all of which were conducted during Biology lessons to gather data. The collected data was analyzed using tables. The findings of the study indicated that the use of resources to enrich the learning experience during Biology lessons served as a source of motivation for the learners, fostering a liking for the subject and subsequently enhancing the pass rate. The study emphasized the importance of collaboration among school authorities and parents to provide adequate resources to support learners, thereby contributing to improved pass rates. Furthermore, the study advocated for the adaptation of handmade resources and models by both teachers and learners to enhance motivation and improve the pass rate. Additionally, the incorporation of outdoor activities was encouraged to promote a learner centred approach and hands-on utilization of resources, aiming to cultivate an enjoyable learning experience in Biology and ultimately enhance the pass rate. The research also recommended the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to develop clear policies for inclusive education and to allocate sufficient financial support to schools for the procurement of resources, which would in turn support both learners and teachers, leading to an improvement in the pass rate for Biology. The research will employ a comprehensive approach, drawing on the principles of effective content area instruction, early childhood development, and the Common European Framework of Reference for language teaching and assessment. By leveraging these resources, the study seeks to address factors contributing to ineffective teaching and learning, particularly in the context of rural primary schools, and aims to improve the academic performance and pass rates of Form 3 students. The project utilized a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods to assess the impact of resource-based teaching on student outcomes. It will also explore the dimensions and performance expectations outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards to ensure a cohesive and comprehensive approach to teaching Biology. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education should design clear policies on inclusion and provision of enough financial support to all the schools for the purchase of resources so as to support learners and teachers and pass rate of Biology will improve.
