- Abstract
- The research aimed to investigate the challenges faced by teachers in using Digital learning platforms in teaching of Physics at Ordinary level in secondary schools in Nyanga district. High failure rate of learners specifically in Physics continues to be a threat globally, regionally, nationally, provincially and at district level, particularly Nyanga District. A lot of concerns have been raised globally regarding overall student achievement, student’s interest in continuing to study Physics. As a science department we are moving towards digital learning though teachers face problems of weak internet, technical and pedagogical challenges via Digital learning platforms. However, even though teachers are facing challenges via Digital learning platforms but this application seems to cover syllabus on time and hence improving pass rates. The study used mixed methods approach and employed a case study design that involved four high schools in Nyanga district. Interviews, questionnaires and observation guide were employed to gather data from the field. Through mixed approach, the research study aimed to answer the following research questions: What are the main digital platforms used by teachers in teaching of Physics at Ordinary level in Nyanga District? What are the challenges faced by teachers in using Digital learning platforms in the teaching of Physics at Ordinary level? How would you mitigate the challenges faced by Physics teachers in using Digital learning platforms as instructional tools? It was revealed that the lack of smart phones and inactive Physics students provide a major challenge in teaching and learning of Physics. Teachers claim that students were indiscipline and other learners appeared to be digital yet they are watching movies. Further, the lack of classroom management will be the greater problem of Digital learning platforms application. The research study recommends the school administration to adopt learning via Digital learning platforms as this helps in syllabus coverage and improves the pass rates of learners.
