- Abstract
- The main aim of this study was to investigate the effects of classroom management on students’ academic performance in mathematics at secondary school level. The researcher sought to address the following research questions: which classroom management strategies can be used in the teaching and learning of mathematics at secondary school, what is the impact of effective classroom management on the academic performance of mathematics learners at secondary school level and what techniques can be used to improve the classroom management of secondary school mathematics teachers? The researcher used the descriptive survey research design in which questionnaires, interviews and non-participatory observations were used to gather data for the study. The data obtained indicates that the main classroom management techniques used by teachers include: adequate planning and lesson preparation, involving all learners in classroom management plan, maintaining consistency on classroom rules, installing cooperative learning strategies, monitoring classroom activities as well as instituting proper seating arrangement. The impacts of effective classroom management noted include: high motivation among learners, a positive classroom climate, non-disruptive behaviour, maximum student engagement, punctuality and socio-emotional balance, as well as absence of delinquent behaviour. The study recommended teachers to: open an effective communication chain, celebrate success of learners, resolve conflicts efficiently, avoid humiliating learners in class, create temperament situation and give learners wide choices from which to choose their likes and dislikes. The researcher did not encounter any major challenges in carrying out the study. The study was completed in 2022.
