- Implementation of competence-based learning in mathematics at three secondary school in Nemangwe area, Gokwe South district, Midlands province
- Abstract
- The study sought to explore the implementation of Competence-Based Learning in mathematics. Data collection, analysis and discussion were grounded in a mixed approach. In this study, thirty learners were randomly selected, seven teachers were purposively selected from the sample, three heads of department and three heads of school participated in this study. The collected data were analyzed according to themes derived from the formulated research questions. Findings of the study showed that implementation of CBL are not effective due to a number of challenges. Whilst the CBL is the driving force in the acquisition of skills needed by the learners to be 21st century compliant in the context of education, there are a lot of issues which need to be ironed out. Implementation of CBL is being hampered by several challenges some of them are lack of resources, inadequate funding, improper infrastructure and disengagement of relevant stakeholders among others. I recommend the ministry and all those responsible to consult first prior to the implementation of CBL. Further, the ministry should engage all stake holders if the implementation of CBL is to succeed. Those responsible for curriculum development should mobilize enough funds to ensure successful implementation of CBL. In addition, enough resources should be channelled into schools and adequate training be done prior to the implementation. Teachers should desist from employing traditional teaching approaches during lesson delivery. Lastly, all stakeholders should embrace the CBL for it to be a success.
