- Abstract
- The study assessed the integration of inquiry-based learning approaches in the teaching and learning of physics at Ordinary level. It emphasized on the identification of inquiry-based methods of instruction, their benefits, challenges and solutions to challenges and how they can be fused and put into effective use. A qualitative approach was employed, purposive random sampling sixteen students, eight from form three and eight from form four classes at high school A. Closed structured interviews and a questionnaire was used to collect data from physics teachers and learners respectively. The collected data was then analyzed by both qualitative and quantitative means and presented in tables and in form of phrases and statements. The perceived benefits have the potential to enhance student engagement which was best explained as an Inquiry-based learning that allows students to take ownership of their learning, better understanding of scientific concepts and critical thinking skills. The perceived challenges on the integration of inquiry based approaches are not limited to inadequate resources, teacher preparedness; measuring quality of inquiry; testing performance and this hindered the effective implementation of inquiry-based approaches in physics education. To put inquiry-based approaches into action, it was recommended that educators should receive comprehensive professional development to effectively implement inquiry-based approaches in the teaching of physics, professional development offer specialized training and ongoing support for educators, curriculum developers and educators should collaborate to align the physics curriculum with inquiry-based learning principles. Curriculum Integration advocated for an integrated STEM approach to address global challenges, aligning physics education with real world issues such as energy and health. This provided a context for inquiry-based learning and foster interdisciplinary connections.
