- Abstract
- This research sought to gain insight into teachers and learners' barriers to effective implementation of practical lessons in Ordinary Level Combined Science classes in Chapanduka Cluster which comprises of three secondary schools in Buhera District which is in Manicaland Province. The researcher adopted mixed approach for data generation, analysis, and discussion. The researcher used a questionnaire guide, an interview guide and an observation guide in generating data. In this study, there were eight male teachers and two female teachers who were purposively sampled to participate. The research study reviewed that many challenges are being experienced by teachers and learners in the effective implementation of practical lessons in ordinary level combined science classes. From the findings, the researcher concluded that Ordinary Level Combined Science teachers in rural areas are not effectively implementing practical lessons. Challenges such as lack of support from school administration, shortage of resources, costs for maintenance of available resources and large class sizes hinder them from effectively implementing practical lessons. The researcher recommends that school administrators should provide necessary equipment for effective combined science learning. Teachers should also improvise and do their duties effectively. Schools should also collaborate and buy equipment they can use as a cluster and take turns to learn.
