- This research assessed the effectiveness of compliance to Environmental and Social Impact Assessment regulations in small-scale mining operations in the Makusha area of Bindura, Mashonaland Central, Zimbabwe. The study aimed to identify challenges faced by miners in complying with ESIA, establish the costs of compliance, and develop a compliance assessment tool. A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews with five small-scale miners. Findings revealed that economic constraints, lack of awareness, and insufficient technical expertise significantly hindered ESIA compliance. The overall compliance rate was found to be only 30%, indicating a critical need for targeted interventions. This issue is significant as ineffective EMS exacerbates environmental degradation, impacting local communities reliant on natural resources. The study's implications underscore the necessity for comprehensive support systems, including training and financial assistance for miners. Recommendations for stakeholders include enhancing community engagement, improving regulatory frameworks, and providing resources to facilitate compliance. This research contributes to understanding the dynamics of ESIA compliance in small-scale mining and highlights the urgent need for sustainable practices to protect the environment and community well-being.
