- Abstract
- This study sought to gain insight into the artisanal mining practices and their impact on environmental management in Chiadzwa Community. The study was grounded on the pragmatist paradigm and mixed method approach. This design enabled the study to inherently exploit the use of both qualitative and quantitative analysis procedure. The sample comprised 82 participants who were selected using stratified random sampling approach and5 village heads purposively selected. The data were collected through semi-structured questionnaire and key informant interviews. Numerical data were analysed through the use of frequencies and percentages, with non-numerical data analysed according to emerging themes. From the analyzed and interpreted data, it was noted that the selected respondents had a diverse understanding of artisanal mining as a concept. Thus, some conceptualized it an activity that legal, with other highlighting it as an illegal activity. In artisanal mining various mining practices were engaged in extracting minerals. In these activities various challenges were encountered to the detriment of the environment. It is in this context that this study concluded that the artisanal mining practices being used in the selected community have to a larger extent a negative impact to the environmental management. From the conclusion, the researcher recommends that artisanal miners be educated on the most effective practices that can be used to extract minerals with minimum damage to the environment.
