- Abstract
- This study investigated the formative assessment practices influenced both achievement and motivation of Grade 7 learners in Mathematics within the Emphini Cluster of the Manzini region in Eswatini. Employing a mixed-methods approach grounded in a constructivist paradigm, the research utilizes a convergent parallel case study design, involving a sample of 10 Mathematics teachers and 185 learners. Data collection methods included questionnaires, structured interviews, and observation checklists, enabling a comprehensive analysis of both quantitative and qualitative data. Data was presented in frequency tables, pie charts and data from interview was analyzed thematically and data from observation analyzed in content analysis. The findings revealed the dual impact of formative assessment, evidenced by improved problem-solving skills and higher test scores among those who receive regular feedback and engage in self-assessment practices. Making it relevant and significant in the field of education. Specific formative assessment strategies, such as peer assessments and interactive quizzes, foster a more engaging learning environment, thereby increasing learner motivation. Despite the positive outcomes, the study identified several barriers to effective implementation, including time constraints, resource limitations, and overcrowded classrooms. Recommendations for overcoming these challenges include the integration of technology, the incorporation of learner feedback in assessment processes, and the utilization of diverse formative assessment methods. This research contributes to the understanding of formative assessment's role in Mathematics education and offers practical recommendations for educators aiming to enhance learner achievement and motivation. The findings underscore the necessity of a systematic approach to formative assessment implementation, which can positively influence both academic performance and learner motivation in Mathematics education.
