Abstract
This study sought to explore female learners’ performance in Ordinary Level Mathematics at the selected high school. The researcher adopted a quantitative approach for data generation, analysis and interpretation. The researcher used questionnaires in generating data. In this study a total of fifty female learners were purposively sampled to participate in the study. The major themes were derived from the research questions and these include: challenges faced by female learners in Ordinary Level Mathematics, teaching and learning and factors that influence female learners’ performance in Ordinary Level Mathematics. The research study revealed that there are many psychosocial challenges that can influence female learners’ performance in Ordinary Level Mathematics. It was also revealed in the study that female learners face a number of challenges which affect their performance in Ordinary Level Mathematics. From the findings, the researcher concluded that female learners’ negative view towards Ordinary Level Mathematics, which results in poor performance was as a result of numerous causes (gender stereotypes, phobia, anxiety, etc.). The researcher recommends that teachers and school administration should have a positive attitude towards female learners’ performance in Ordinary Level Mathematics.
