- Abstract
- This study investigated the integration of Indigenous Knowledge Systems in the teaching of mathematics at primary school level. The main objectives of the study were to determine the challenges in IKS integration in teaching of mathematics at primary level, establish the importance ok using Indigenous Knowledge Systems in teaching of mathematics and to come up with approaches that can be used in minimizing the challenges on IKS integration in teaching of mathematics. The study employed a qualitative research within the interpretive research paradigm. The sample consisted of 3 teachers and 3 administrators selected from 1 primary School in Mudzi District using purposive and cluster sampling technique .The major findings of the study revealed that student’s engagement and comprehension of mathematical ideas improved when Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) are incorporated into elementary mathematical instruction. The study found out that there are several obstacles to overcome while incorporating IKS into mathematical curriculum, chief among them being curriculum restrictions, resource shortage and community opposition. The study also noted that multifaceted strategy including curriculum flexibility, professional development, community participation and resource development is needed to integrate IKS at primary level. Lastly a wide range of instructional strategies and resources catered to the different learning levels of the students were necessary for IKS into basic mathematics education. Based on the findings, the study recommends that the Ministry of Education provide focused professional development programs to emphasize IKS, establish cooperative learning opportunities and produce culturally appropriate material that represent indigenous viewpoints in the mathematics curriculum. The Ministry of Education should develop awareness programs aimed at communities and parents that highlight the advantages of integrating IKS into classrooms.
