- Abstract
- This study focused on teaching methods used by grade 5 teachers in teaching addition of fractions in Khami District; Bulawayo Province. A qualitative research approach and case study design was employed while a purposive sampling technique was used to come up with six grade 5 teachers and three Head of Grades (HOGs) to participate in the study. Interviews and questionnaires were the two research instruments used to gather data from the respondents. Interviews were used in respect of grade 5 teachers and questionnaires were used in respect of HOGs in three selected schools in Khami District. Thematic analysis was then used to analyze the data. The major research findings were that teachers mostly use the demonstration and group work method when teaching addition of fractions; the study also revealed that teachers face challenges of managing classes with many learners and lack of teaching resources; it also emerged that teachers help grade 5 learners to understand addition of fractions by remediating slow learners during the lesson, using concrete teaching and learning media when teaching and engaging parents in their learning to ensure homework compliance and that staff developing teachers on how to teach addition of fractions can enhance their expertise on how to help grade 5 learners to understand addition of fractions.
