- Abstract
- The study was piloted in Matongorere Village in Murewa, Mashonaland East Province. The project was done in order to investigate the effects of inter row spacing and fertilizer levels on the performance of sesame (Sesamum Indicum L). The trial was laid as a 3 by 4 factorial experiment laid in a Randomized Complete Block Design. The two factors were different inter row spacing’s (30cm, 45cm a 60 cm) and different fertilizer levels (0kg /ha, 50kg/ha, 100kg /ha and 150kg /ha. the fertilizer used was compound D whose nutrient composition is N 7%. P14%. K7%. The main objective was to determine effect of inter row spacing and fertilizer level on the performance of sesame. There was significant interaction (p˂ 0.05) between inter row spacing and fertilizer levels on the performance of sesame. The results clearly demonstrate that both inter row spacing and fertilizer levels significantly influenced the vegetative growth, reproductive development, and overall yield of sesame. The best results were obtained by using 45cm inter row spacing combined with 150kg/ha compound D fertilizer in all measured parameters. Adopting to this combination would better light penetration and reduce competition thereby improving growth. Adequate fertilization boosts growth parameters ensuring sustainable sesame production.
