- Abstract
- This study investigated the ergonomic safety knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of DPFs working in a resource-constrained mining environment (RME) in Zimbabwe. The study assessed worker perceptions, systemic barriers influencing practice adoption, and task-specific ergonomic exposures using a structured questionnaire and observational assessments (RULA and REBA). Despite the fact that most participants showed a high level of ergonomic knowledge and positive attitudes, obstacles like limited training, poor lighting, a heavy workload, and limited access to lifting aids kept their safety practices moderate. Across all maintenance tasks, very high physical risk levels were consistently indicated by REBA and RULA scores. By combining behavioural data with observational scoring, the study adds to the body of literature by providing a context-specific diagnostic to direct ergonomic interventions in mining operations. Findings are significant for safety practitioners, policy makers, and researchers seeking to enhance musculoskeletal health and safety in low-resource industrial environments.
