- Abstract
- This research aimed to investigate the iron content of Prince's Feather, a plant commonly known as Amaranthus hypochondriacus with potential to address iron deficiencies particularly in developing countries such as Zimbabwe. Iron is an essential mineral required for various physiological functions in the human body. The samples were collected from different sources, ensuring representation and minimizing variation. Plant samples were dried, powdered and ashed. The ash was then filtered using sulphuric acid before being titrated against potassium permanganate. The findings revealed the presence of a significant iron content, indicating the potential of Prince's Feather as a dietary source of iron. The study also explored factors that may influence the iron content of Prince's Feather, such as soil composition. The implications of the iron content in Prince's Feather are significant, as it represents a natural and potentially accessible source of dietary iron. Iron deficiency is a prevalent nutritional concern, particularly in populations with limited access to diverse food sources. The availability of iron-rich plant-based alternatives, such as Prince's Feather, can contribute to addressing iron deficiency and improving overall nutritional status. The findings highlight the potential of Prince's Feather as a source of dietary iron. Further research is warranted to explore the bioavailability and absorption of iron from Prince's Feather, as well as the impact of processing and cooking methods on its iron content. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of plant-based iron sources and their potential role in addressing iron deficiency.
