The Influence of green procurement on the sustainability performance of the mining sector in Zimbabwe

Abstract

The study was set out to investigate the influence of green procurement on the sustainability performance of the mining sector in Zimbabwe. The study was directed by four objectives which were, to evaluate the impact of green packaging on the sustainability performance of the mining industry in Zimbabwe, to examine the influence of green distribution on the sustainability performance of the mining industry in Zimbabwe, to assess the effects of green supplier selection on the sustainability performance of the mining industry in Zimbabwe and to analyze the impact of reverse logistics on the sustainability performance of the mining industry in Zimbabwe. The study was hinged on the theories of classical conditioning, resource-based theory, institutional theory and stakeholder theory. A quantitative methodology was adopted using a sample of 94 respondents questionnaire survey was carried out. The study adopted descriptive statistics of the central limit theorem and inferential analysis of correlation and regression analysis was used through SPSS 26. The study revealed significant impacts of green packaging, green supplier selection, and reverse logistics on sustainability performance in the mining sector. Supported by literature, green packaging was found to influence product market value. Similarly, green supplier selection positively affected sustainability, contrasting with insignificant effects of green distribution. Reverse logistics significantly impacted sustainability, aligning with prior research highlighting its role in waste reduction and resource conservation. The study's recommendations encompass government policies incentivizing green practices, stringent environmental regulations, collaboration between the Ministry of Mines and stakeholders to develop green guidelines, training programs, integration of green procurement, investment in reverse logistics infrastructure, regular environmental audits, and fostering a sustainability culture within mining companies.
