- Abstract
- This research investigated the impact of land-use gradients on tree species diversity, structural attributes, and carbon stocks in the Mhondoro region, recognizing the significance of these factors for biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. The study addressed the critical problem of habitat loss and degradation due to agricultural expansion, which threatens local ecosystems and ecosystem services. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, including quadrat sampling and semi-structured interviews, data were collected across natural forests, croplands, and homelands. Quantitative data involved tree species identification, DBH measurements, and carbon stock estimations, while qualitative data captured community perceptions and conservation practices. The main findings revealed that natural forests exhibited significantly higher tree species richness and carbon stocks compared to croplands and homelands, highlighting the importance of preserving these ecosystems. Structural attributes also indicated better tree health in natural forests. Community interviews underscored the role of local knowledge in biodiversity management but also identified socio-economic challenges to conservation. Significant conclusions emphasized the need for integrated land-use policies that balance agricultural productivity with ecological sustainability. Recommendations include promoting agroforestry, supporting community-based conservation, and implementing long-term monitoring programs. These findings are relevant to policymakers, conservation practitioners, and local communities, providing insights for informed decision-making to enhance biodiversity conservation and ecosystem resilience in Mhondoro and similar regions.
