- In many developing countries, food security has long been a pressing issue, particularly in drought-prone areas with limited rainfall. The situation has been exacerbated by deteriorating economic and social conditions, including high unemployment, which has further compromised food security and dietary diversity, especially in rural areas. The primary goal of this research was to assess the contribution and level of adoption of keyhole gardens on household food security and diversity in Chimanimani district. This study employed a participatory approach, engaging multiple stakeholders to collect both quantitative and qualitative data from a random sample of 169 households in the district. Data was gathered through questionnaires and interviews with key informants. To assess the impact of keyhole gardens on household food security, the researcher compared the mean scores of Household Dietary Diversity (HDD) between households with keyhole gardens and those without, providing insights into the contribution of these gardens to dietary diversity. The study's findings showed a notable difference in food security and dietary diversity between households with keyhole gardens and those without, indicating that keyhole garden owners enjoy greater food security and a broader range of food options. Based on these results, the study recommends that households adopt keyhole gardening to enhance food security and generate income. Additionally, the government, donors, and other organizations should provide support to households to overcome the challenges they face in maintaining gardens, thereby promoting food security and sustainable livelihoods.
