Siyalima Dam, a vital water resource supporting irrigation, drinking water, and recreation for
surrounding communities, faces threats from non-point sources of pollution. This study aimed to identify and quantify these sources, assess water quality, and determine the impacts of pollution on the environment and human health. A mixed-methods approach combined
interviews, questionnaires, observations, water tests, composite soil sampling from tributary streams, and geospatial analysis using Google Earth Engine. Soil samples revealed elevated levels of heavy metals and nutrients, indicating potential pollution sources from agricultural runoff and artisanal mining. Water quality analysis showed elevated levels of nutrients, heavy
metals, and bacteria, posing risks to human health and the environment. A land-use model and hydro-shed area mapping were developed to guide sustainable management and mitigation strategies. This research will inform policymakers, environmental managers, and local
communities to protect this critical water resource.
