- Abstract
- The study investigated school-community the relationships between the performance on grade six learners and community at one primary school in Mutoko District in Mashonaland East Province. The study unveiled that the teacher and the school head can develop strategies to improve school-community relations with the aim of assisting learners to pass. The study used a qualitative research methodology. The study sampled 2 teachers who are experienced in teaching grade six at that school. Eighteen grade six learners were also involved in the study. In-depth face to face interviews were used, observations and focus-group discussions were used to gather data. Three Focus Group Discussions were done with 3 groups of learners whist interviews were made to two the seasoned teachers. The observations were made during school general meetings, school events and whenever parents were visiting the school. The data gathered revealed that teacher parental relationship is critical for students’ performance. Where there are poor school-community relationships, normally there is a high failure rate of learners. Furthermore, it was revealed that school heads can improve the school-community relationship by having consistent meetings with parents where the role of parents is stressed. Recommendations were made for teacher, school administrators, and the ministry to promote good relationship with community. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education should conduct a comprehensive recommendations across multiple schools to examine the state of school-community relationships and their impact on student learning outcomes. There should be good guidelines for schools to effectively build and maintain strong community partnerships. Teachers should engage with local community leaders and including parents, business owners, and community leaders, to foster their critical role in making learners perform well.
