- Abstract
- This study examined the effectiveness of collaborative learning in the teaching and learning of science. Guided by research questions, the study reviewed related literature which established collaborative learning as an important approach for enhancing learners’ understanding and mastery of scientific concepts. A qualitative research methodology was employed, involving teachers and students as participants. Data were collected through questionnaires and interviews to capture participants’ views and experiences, while ethical considerations such as privacy and confidentiality were upheld. The findings revealed that learner differences in attitude, motivation, self-discipline, and ability levels posed significant challenges for teachers when implementing collaborative learning. Large class sizes and diverse learner needs made lesson planning and classroom management demanding, often leading teachers to adopt average teaching methods that failed to adequately support both slow and advanced learners. Despite these challenges, the study found that collaborative learning, through strategies such as group work, pair work, and class discussions, promoted cognitive, behavioural, and social interdependence among learners. Interaction among peers, teachers, parents, and caregivers was identified as crucial to effective learning. Overall, the study concludes that while collaborative learning is beneficial, its successful implementation requires careful planning, appropriate teaching strategies, and manageable class sizes to meet diverse learner needs.
