- Abstract
- The study aimed at examining and understand the factors contributing to the observed increase and recurrence in occupational accidents cases at Triple C Pigs. The research used stratified random sampling to select 60 participants from various workstations at Triple C Pigs which included, Mill site, Main site, Weaner, Grower, Workshop and maintenance, Artificial Insemination and HC & General and Biosecurity. Of the 60 workers who were issued with the questionnaires, only 54 responded. The questionnaire gathered information on relationship between socio-demographic details to causation of accidents, the perceived accident causes, types of injuries sustained by workers and the occupational accidents trends. Observations were also conducted to validate the questionnaire data. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze data, and the results indicated that machinery and equipment use was the most common cause of occupational accidents accounting to 35.19%, lifting and bending also contributed to the accidents with 33.33% and slips & falls and machinery accidents were the most common nature of the accidents at Triple C Pigs. It also showed that most accidents frequently occurred at any time of the day accounting for 53.7 % followed by late afternoon accounting for 31.48% and the less frequent was during the night shift with 1.85%. Proper training and refresher training for all machine and equipment operators must be frequently done and making sure that there are Standard Operating Procedures for a machine related work and the mill site must procure effective mechanical lifting aids to reduce the recurring occupational accidents.
