- Abstract
- The mining industry is one of the most hazardous sectors globally, with persistent challenges in ensuring worker safety and wellbeing. This study went on to investigate the actual effectiveness of new technologies in hazard identification and risk mitigation and to also analyze the challenges associated with the implementation success of these new technologies. The research aimed to assess the effectiveness of various new technologies across different departments and also identify the practical challenges encountered during their implementation. The case study was done out at Selous Metallurgical Complex Zimplats in Chegutu district from February to May 2025. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative data from structured questionnaires with close ended questions, historical accident trend analysis and qualitative insights from open ended interview questions. Safety performance indicators such as Lost Time Injuries (LTIs), emergency response times and number of fatigue related incidents were thoroughly analyzed before and after technology implementation. Descriptive and inferential Statistical analysis was used to make conclusions on the findings with the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Twenty-five respondents (n=25) were purposively selected to participate in the study. The results owed statistically significant reductions in incidents, LTIs, response times and an increase in hazard detection rates. Cohen’s d values indicated large effect sizes for most variables. Qualitative interview findings also supported this. However, a lot of challenges were also identified such as training gaps, financial constraints, resistance from employees and inadequate legislations. The study concludes that new safety technologies play a transformative role in improving mine safety and contractor wellbeing, but their success is continuously hindered by strategic implementation, organizational support, financial constraints and regulatory alignment. The research offers practical recommendations and lays a foundation for future studies on adaptive safety systems in resource-intensive industries.
