Background: The food and beverage sector directly influence on nutrition and food safety. However, contaminated food causes over 200 diseases and affects millions globally, particularly the elderly and children under the age of five years.
Objective: Evaluation of implementation of a food safety management system based on ISO 22000:2018 at beverage manufacturing industry for low- and middle-income settings using a Zimbabwean beverage company (Prodairy) as a case study.
Methods: A descriptive case study was done at Prodairy Private Limited, Ruwa, Zimbabwe from August 2024 to May 2025. A face to face in depth interview and a closed ended questionnaire were used to solicit data from 128 employees. Prodairy ISO 22000:2018 implementation
documents were reviewed and analyzed using mixed method appraisal tool. Blooms cut off point was used to score on the agreement of participants on the challenges and successes of ISO 22000:2018 implementation. Thematic analysis was used to analyse qualitative data.
Key findings: A moderate agreement (62.5%) found using blooms cut off points for strong agreement between participants that there were challenges encountered during ISO 22000:2018 implementation which include inadequate training, resistance to change by employees and lack of employee consultation. On success there was a strong agreement (80.5%) using blooms cut off points that ISO 22000:2018 achieved some successes including improved competitive advantage and employee awareness to safety at Prodairy. The presence of well documented training records and procedures at Prodairy shows commitment to ISO 22000:2018 implementation. - Date
