- Decimal numbers pose significant challenges to learners at Grade 5 level often leading to misconceptions and difficulties in solving problems with these mathematical numbers. This research is aimed at exploring specific challenges faced by learners in solving problems involving decimal numbers and to identify potential strategies to enhance their understanding and proficiency in this topic. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Structured questionnaires were administered to a diverse sample of facilitators and Grade 5 learners to gather quantitative data on their difficulties, misconceptions and attitudes towards teaching and learning of decimal numbers. Additionally, in-depth interviews were conducted with a smaller subset of learners and facilitators to gain deeper insight into the challenges faced and potential solutions. Data analysis involves the use of descriptive statistics to summarise questionnaire responses and inferential statistics to examine relationships between variables. Thematic analysis were applied to the interview transcripts to identify common challenges and potential strategies for improvement. Furthermore, ethical considerations were upheld throughout the research process ensuring participant confidentiality, informed consent and voluntary participation. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on the challenges faced by learners in solving problems involving decimal numbers and provide practical recommendations for educators and curriculum developers to enhance teaching and learning strategies.
