- Abstract
- This study investigated errors and misconceptions held by O level students in the learning of transformation geometry in Zone B in Insiza District. Students often struggle to grasp the concept of transformation leading to persistent errors and misconceptions. Through a mixed methods approach, questionnaire, interviews and document analysis, the researcher collected data to identify common mistakes and misunderstandings that students hold in transformation topics translation, rotation and reflection. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis to reveal errors and misconceptions. The findings revealed four primary errors and misconceptions among students namely; students often treat translation vector as matrices leading to incorrect calculations and applications, students frequently interchanged x and y coordinates when plotting points resulting in incorrect graphing and transformation, students commonly mistook the line X = 0 as Y = 0, error of describing reflection as rotation. Teacher participants identified four strategies that can be used to address errors and misconceptions namely: use of traditional teaching methods, use of technology and digital tools during teaching and learning, group work and peer instruction, and hands on activities and manipulatives. The study recommends using visual media in teaching and learning transformation geometry; using various problems of transformation, identifying the correct way of dealing with each problem; using colourful images to help students to recognize the differences between the original objects and image points; and that the government should increase grants given to schools so that the schools can access Wi-Fi and integrate ICT in teaching and learning processes. The results of this study were expected to provide important insights to educators, policymakers, and local stakeholders seeking to enhance mathematics learning outcomes.
