This study investigates the challenges faced by the brickmaking, tile manufacturing, and clay products industry in managing solid waste, using Zimtile Pvt Ltd in Sotherton, Harare, as a case study. As industrial waste generation increases in Zimbabwe, there is growing concern over its environmental and social impacts, particularly in densely populated urban industrial areas. Three main objectives guided the study, and the first one was to examine the existing waste management practices used by Zimtile, followed by assessing the challenges and environmental impacts arising from improper waste management, and lastly, to explore potential strategies and solutions for improvement. A mixed methods approach was adopted, combining quantitative data from structured questionnaires and qualitative insights from interviews, observations, and document review. The study was framed using the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), Systems Theory, and Stakeholder Theory and Stakeholder Theory to analyze institutional behavior, industrial dynamics, and environmental accountability. Findings revealed that Zimtile primarily disposes of waste through burning and on-site dumping, with minimal recycling or reuse. Challenges identified include inadequate infrastructure, limited funding, weak enforcement of policy, and strained community relations due to pollution. Despite these issues, respondents expressed support for interventions such as employee training, technological upgrades, recycling programs, and stakeholder engagement. The study concludes that Zimtile’s waste management practices remain largely unsustainable, but with proper investment, policy enforcement, and collaboration, the company can transition toward environmentally responsible operations. The research contributes to national priorities outlined in Vision 2030, NDS1, and Education 5.0, while aligning with global goals under Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recommendations include developing a formal waste management policy, improving infrastructure, engaging communities, and fostering partnerships with regulators and recyclers.
